Are you hot or cold?

Hello!  Happy Summer! I wanted to share some information that may benefit you as many of us cope with the current heatwave and high temperatures.  How are you handling this hot weather? How is your body and mind managing? Many people cope by consuming cold drinks and food while staying in air-conditioned spaces. (I am currently sitting in my office with a blanket wrapped around me because the A/C is blasting, and it’s too cold!)  The extremes of heat and cold can lead to various health issues. A common concern I see in my practice is clients experiencing sudden, acute digestive problems, such as nausea, bloating, gas, and diarrhea.  In hot weather, we often cool ourselves by choosing cold foods and drinks, which can create an excess of coldness in our bodies. While this may feel refreshing at first, over time, it can overwhelm our digestive system, compromising our ability to process this coldness.  As a result, our stomachs may rebel, leading to discomfort, nausea, bloating, gas, stomach pain, constipation, or diarrhea. Low energy and fatigue can also occur, leaving us feeling unwell and 'off' during the summer.  So, how can you maintain balance in this heat? A simple way to assess your body’s needs is to try a hot beverage followed by a cold one. Start with warm to hot water and notice how you feel. If it improves your stomach's comfort, you may need more warm foods and drinks.  Similarly, do the same with cold water. If it enhances your stomach's comfort, opt for cooler foods and drinks. The temperature that provides relief is a good indicator of how to balance your digestive system.  Pay attention to your food choices and aim for a balance between heat and cold every day. During weeks of hot weather, it may be beneficial to favour tepid to warm foods.  I hope you find this information helpful. Please feel free to ask any questions for clarification! Best,  Susanda, R.
